Go Daddy…sapphic. Blech. But… those ads are as good for the PR as for the initial showing.

The chickens:

Hannibal: They were laying all of those eggs?
Clarice Starling: And they were screaming.
Hannibal Lecter: And you ran away?
Clarice Starling: No. First I tried to free them. I… I opened the door to their cages, but they wouldn’t run. They just stood there, confused. They wouldn’t run.
Hannibal Lecter: But you could and you did, didn’t you?
Clarice Starling: I don’t know. I didn’t have any food, any water and it was very cold, very cold. I thought, I thought if I could save just one, but… she was so feathery. So feathery, I kept sneezing. I didn’t get more than a few miles when the sheriff’s car picked me up. The chicken farmer was so angry he sent me to live at the Lutheran orphanage in Bozeman. I never saw the chicken farm again.
Hannibal Lecter: What became of your chicken, Clarice?
Clarice Starling: They ate her egg at Dennys with a side of bacon.

Non-advertising point: Mardi Gras this year is going to be slightly more interesting this year than in previous years… some commentator just said “You can imagine what it’s like down in the French Quarter”…. whoever is down there right now will have to imagine it at a later date b/c something tells me they won’t be able to remember it.

Aw: here is the Clydesdale ad. Aw. There’s actually a law in Missouri that you have to “Aw” when the Clydesdales come on. Something tells me that “especially fences” line is supposed to be metaphorical and have some big meaning, but I can only think of the Robert Frost line “Good fences make good neighbors.”

I should also say that for those who haven’t been tracking the Clydesdales situation: They originally weren’t going to air this ad. It was filmed in November I think and when the original cut was presented they said it wasn’t going to air. Then people got all bent out of shape and called it un-American, which is kind of a big deal when your company was bought by a Belgian company in the past year. So then the re-edited it, said they’d let the consumers decide by a vote, put it on the Facebook page and made people become friends in order to see it. So it all worked out. For Budweiser.

Squirrel: Let me summarize the Super Bowl advertising with one word: Rodents.

The chickens are still screaming. Why is the supposedly female chicken who is supposedly the president sitting in an oval office (egg shaped?) wearing a man’s tie? So gay men can’t have a dating site, but the chickens can crossdress? I don’t care about your politics, but if Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin have taught us anything, it’s that the first female president is unlikely to wear a tie.

This is a total side-note, but I lived in Louisiana for almost five years and when I hear people pronounce it “New Or-le-ans” instead of “New Or-luhns” it just crawls up one side and down the other.

Beyonce: Please let this be a funny ad and not for her stinky new perfume. Zombies… okay- so far, zombies are good, but I’m a little concerned that they might try to romanticize them the way they have vampires (“Oh, Bob…. you have such beautiful eyes…” “Thanks Mary- here, YOU take them.. “[POP-POP])… Beavers… wait- is this the 2nd ad with beavers in it. Beavers are the new monkeys. (You don’t know how hard it is to avoid a Naked Gun reference here). Two YouTube references, “chocolate rain.” Eh- there’s a phrase in creative development- “your strategy is showing”- and here it was showing “Oh- pick media from all over and put it in one place.” Also- in the pregame they made some comment about how only Vizio has this widget thing. Which doesn’t explain why my Samsung has this Yahoo! widget thing too.
